Introduction: Products: We change the radio in a Volvo 240 - 1990 series. Since this is a popular vehicle among many people, we decided to highlight the installation. This installation was performed by AUTOTOYS.COM - A security system and remote start was added to the vehicle, mercury switch in the trunk and we bypassed the factory amplifier and added a new radio. The front speakers were also changed to a pair of 5.25 coaxial speakers which improved sound by 300%
\PARTS REQUIRED: SEE OUR DASH KIT DEPARTMENT HERE
Removal of the glovebox is not needed, but it does make installation of your new radio easier. Theer are about 7 phillips head screws around the frame of the glovebox, then 2 more on the left side and right side on the underside of the glovebox. The glovebox is then simply removed by pulling it OUTWARDS.
To remove the factory radio, remove plate to the left of the radio, there will be 2 TORX 15 screws. We also mounted the LED for the alarm in this location. After removing the 2 Torx screws, the radio will slide out.
You will need to remove the panel around the radio to get to the factory amplifier. The pictures you will see in the next few photographs are of FACTORY WIRING. It is NOT PRETTY. Similiar plugs, dozens of wires running in separate directions. We decided to take a photograph of the original locations before DISCONNECTING the factory plugs. This should help us and you in reinserting the factory connectors into the original locations. The bulbs for the entire dash is chain linked together. To remove the dash, there will be 2 slot things on each side of the dash, insert a flat head screwdriver and turn it 90 degrees, the plug will come out. On top of that will be 2 TORX 30 screws, insert your TORX30 screwdriver and remove the screws, there will be 2 TORX 15 screws located near the VENT controls, remove those 2 screws. After removing all these screws, the cover can be removed. Exposed will be the POCKET with the factory amplifier attached, 4 TORX 30 screws hold this in each corner.
Shown above is the factory plug for the original radio. Since no aftermarket plug harness exist, we decided to retain the factory plug for future use and use 3M t-taps on the existing wires. We tapped 4 wires: RED: POWER ANTENNA (+) Note the factory amplifier AMP DIN plug located next to the antenna connector.
Shown above is the large plug that was in the factory amplifier. Since we decided to retain the plug, we also used 3M t-taps (available in our TOOLS SECTION IN OUR STOREFRONT) to make the connections. We needed to tap 8 wires, 2 wires for each speakers. 4 speakers in the vehicle. The wires are running from LEFT TO RIGHT and are of the smaller gauge wires in the plug. It was easy to find the speaker wires. This effectively bypassed the factory amplifier.
