BACK TO *1999* YEAR TECH SUMMARY | BACK TO DIY 2000-2006 TECH SUMMARY

Introduction:
This is an autotoys.com installation. One of several hundred by the staff of autotoys.com
This article is a sample of knowledge gained by working on real cars for over 18 years.
Online for over 10 years, when you buy a product from us, we give you real support when you need it.
Instant access to answers through our customer forums. With thousands of customers, avoid delays, errors and miscalculations in your installation.. buy from autotoys.com - your outlet for car audio, car alarms and auto accessories.

Products:
If you have an interest in any of the products in this article, everything featured (electrical tape, connectors, radio, alarm, wire ties, rca cables, diodes, screws --- everything is available 'now' (FOR SALE!) through our storefront). Remember, there may be many manufacturers out there who sell similar products as the ones featured in our articles, but if you want a problem-free smooth professional install, your only guarantee is to buy the same parts we use (see our storefront). Any slight difference in any of the parts and your install is ruined (plus you won't have access to our post sale support or forums). Especially important for alarm, radio and OEM changer products.

Sales People (be careful!)::
Everyday, we get dozens of requests through our chat & ticket support system, request for forum passwords, questions on installation problems or questions. We can only focus on questions from our customers. The questions are simple.. the answers are simple - but these people, because they did not buy from AUTOTOYS.COM cannot get an answer. Dont make a mistake by buying through auctions, fly by night operations or new pop up websites who are just a voice over the phone (a sales person) with absolutely NO EXPERIENCE.

No experience installing in cars, no experience what-so-ever! They barely know the products they sell! Don't make that mistake! Make sure your purchase is from autotoys.com. These articles are proof we know what we are doing and that we WORK IN CARS! We work on the newest cars with the newest products.

The 98 LEXUS GS 400 is a excellent vehicle. However, we wanted to add a MINIDISC CHANGER to the factory Nakamichi system with 6 CD changer.

The following parts were used. Available in our storefront: The CD changer and RMX pack is in our CD departments and the wires/accessories are in our TOOLS departments.

  • Sony MINIDISC MDX C65 6MD changer
  • Sony RMX 69RF FM modulated Pack with wireless remote control
  • 6 Feet of 18gauge speaker wire
  • 6 Feet of 18gauge trace wire
  • 1 Roll 3M electrical tape
  • 3 T-taps
  • 6 Butt Connectors
  • 3 Male Insulated Spade Connectors for T-Taps
  • 3 sets of 2 feet Antenna Extension cables

Remove the factory ashtray. Shift the shifter forward. Pull on ashray, it is held in only via clips.

Remove the trim around the shifter

Life the wood trim center console straight up. It is held in via clips. Disconnect the plugs for the heated seats, tr5anission shift mode and the VSC control.

Picture of both parts removed

This is the plug to the AUX lighter plug located in the center console. This is where we will draw our accessory power from. It is 3.5 amp fused and a excellent place for the power source since our car is a NAKAMICHI BASED SYSTEM, we did not want to draw power from the radio/tuner since noise can be induced from those circuits.

2 10-mmm bolts are located under the radio. Carefully remove these. When replacing them, the BLACK BOLTS are for UNDER THE RADIO. The GOLD 10mm bolts are for the TOP mounts.

You will need to remove the top vent/clock assembly. Shown in the 2 corners are the silver gold 10mm bolts.

Note: The build qualirty of a LEXUS by Toyota. Notice those HEAVY DUTY wire ties holding factory wires going across the heater vents? Notice how they wrap factory plugs. The people building these cars, REALLY REALLY CARE.

Located to the left of the factory rearview mirror is some dotted shade lines. This effectively hides the unit from display. Shown above is the DISPLAY unit for the RMX69 RF pack which controls the MINIDISC CHANGER. It fits perfectly and does not affect the rearview mirror or adjustments. IT CANNOT BE SEEN FROM THE OUTSIDE and is protected from the sun by the factory tint, shaded dots and also isolated via velcro from the glass itself.

Run the wires down the driver side a-pillar. The large hose you see is the drain hose for the sunroof. The A-Piller trim snaps outward towards the passenger and pulls UPWARD. Note: IT LOCKS INTO PLACE ON THE BOTTOM, Pull it straight up!

We needed to use 3 sets of 2 foot antenna extensions because the display cable allowed us only enough slack to mount the RMX control module near the parking brake area. The module was mounted BEHIND the silver trim computer near the foor rest. The antenna extensions allowed our RMX unit to extend the antenna connections enough to reach the factory radio location.

The power, accessory and ground wires also needed to be extended. We used 18 gauge speaker wire to do the trick, which we ran to the center console cigarette light plug.

We used 1/4 inch loom available in your TOOLS department to protect the wires to chaffing and from the center vents running to the back of the car.

You can tuck the wire next to the vent running down the center of the car. (JUST LIKE THE FACTORY LOOM (on left)

Cut back the insulation going to the factory center console lighter plug. The WHITE/BLACK WIRE is GROUND. The Pink wire is ACCESSORY - Note. ALWAYS CONNECT YOUR GROUND FIRST!'

'

We used t-taps to easily tap the wires.

Pictures of wires tapped and wires ran.

Tuck the excess wire if any into the hole on the right. Plenty of room.

his picture has no basis for our installation. It is simply a picture of a computer in the center console. Notice that little plastic sheet above the wire harness/loom? Well, we didn’t put it there. LEXUS DID THIS to prevent dirt or water from your cup holders in the center console from leaking onto the computer wires. THAT IS QUALITY! AND IMPRESSIVE

We mounted the changer under the driver’s seat so we can easily change the MDs. It fits even when the seat is in the LOWEST down position. This may not work for you if you carry a lot of long legged backseat passengers, but for us, it was no problem

Picture of display

This is your wire for your CONSTANT connection. NOT NEEDED. This connection is not required, it is used onlyif the clock to work on the display. The color of the wire is blue/yellow and is constant all the time. LOWEST PLUG. There is a pick option on the RMX module which lets you use only the 2 wires off the ACCESSORY (cig lighter plug wires) to power the unit.

To remove the vent, we used a pick tool and pulled it out.

Cassettes are out. Minidisc is in. Since Car manufacturers do not quite offer MINIDISC as a option yet, tuning your MINIDISC through a RF FM pack may be a good alternative. Consider it for yourself.
